![]() ![]() You'll need 2.5GB of hard disk space for your installation, and, as with all recent Steinberg products, a key. Steinberg recommend a minimum processor speed of 800MHz for PCs (Pentium or Athlon), and 867MHz for Macs (G4 or higher), with a minimum 384MB of RAM on both platforms. Whether you're a Mac OS X or Windows XP user, Halion Player will work for you, although the minimum system requirements are quite high, as you would expect for a modern software sampler, and Mac use is only advised if you're running Mac OS 10.3.3 or later. The version we're examining is numbered 3.1 - this is actually the first release of HP, but its anomalous version number reflects the latest release of the full version of Halion. ![]() It's fair to say that HP is aimed at novices or entry-level users who want to get underway without spending too much money. The full package's sophisticated interface and plentiful editing and audio manipulation tools are missing, too. So if you load Programs created with Halion into HP, they'll sound exactly the same, right down to effects processing and surround routing - but you can't access these functions for editing from HP's streamlined interface. It can play back any libraries or Programs created with Halion, including, as I've just mentioned, the libraries of any third-party plug-in based on the same technology.Īll the core technology of Halion is included, such as the 32-bit audio engine, disk streaming, effects and the ability to output audio in surround. In a nutshell, then, Halion Player places a streamlined front end onto the Halion engine and comes bundled with the full 2.5GB Halion library. Best of all, though, HP only costs 70 quid! What's In The Box ![]() However, HP differs from these in that it can load other sound sets, while the libraries that use HP as a 'wrapper' are 'fixed'. HP (as I'll be referring to it in this article) is equipped with the simplified interface adopted by String Edition and the increasing number of sample library instruments that use Halion Player as a virtual instrument 'wrapper' for their sounds. Somewhere along the line, Steinberg must have asked the question: 'What if there are people out there who want the library bundled with Halion, but don't need the full range of editing facilities?' The answer is Halion Player, subject of this review. This huge and detailed library is self-contained, not requiring the full version of Halion to run. The engine at the heart of the software also forms the backbone for a number of third-party sample library plug-in instruments, including Steinberg's own Halion String Edition (now with added '2'). With their Halion software sampler, Steinberg released a product deservedly renowned for its power, sound and flexibility. The free LoFi Piano has such a beautiful low fidelity that it will relax your audience and mesmerize everybody who hears it.If you want the sample playback features of Steinberg's Halion sample player, but you don't need its detailed editing facilities, there's now an affordable answer to your needs - and it includes the full Halion sound library too. The free VST guitar created by Cinematique Instruments focuses on so-called flageolet notes or harmonics and creates very pure and clear sounds of an electric guitar. The free Alto Glockenspiel by Cinematique Instruments for HALion provides you with the original sound of the legendary Glockenspiel, but adds some fresh effects to turn the sound into something new. The streamlined VST workstation lets you load and play a plethora of sound content: the SE libraries shipping with Steinberg’s digital audio workstations, VST Sound Instrument Sets for HALion and the custom user libraries created within the HALion 6 sampler and sound creation system HALion Sonic SE 3 is available for free as a plug-in for any VST3, VST2, AU and AAX compatible host and as a stand-alone application for macOS and Windows. HALion Sonic SE 3 crack is a stripped-down version of HALion Sonic 3 mac download without giving up on sound quality and accessibility. Steinberg HALion Sonic SE 3 v3.5.10 macOS ![]()

I do love a bit of D&D, but it’s still ripe for send-up in this mend-bending adventure set in a tabletop RPG played by Lilith, Brick and Mordecai and DM’d by Tiny Tina. In which case, they are horrendous acid/fire/spark-spitting bullet-sponges. Floating spores are mostly non-hostile unless disturbed. The balance of these packs is a bit weird. ![]() Once you reach the second area the quest levels jump straight up to 35, so this is definitely second or third. For a game that’s normally so vibrant, it’s rather unbecoming.Įven though the enemies start around level 31, they seem fundamentally tougher than the level 31 enemies of, say, Captain Scarlett. The action also takes place under some kind of plateau, so it’s permanently gloomy - unfortunately, this gloom seems to be artificially generated by a filter washing all the colour out. It only feels big because the new fan-boat vehicle is extremely sluggish, and the terrain is lumpy enough that its rocky little streams slow you down even more. Well, Borderlands 2 certainly is a big game. Winning the DLC unleashes the phattest lewt, unlike the hilariously bad lewt released by the final boss of Borderlands 1. Well, the final boss would have been truly awesome if I wasn’t so over-levelled it went down in under two minutes. The shouting is quite funny, but I can imagine other people finding it tiresome. Aside from some the shouting, though, there’s nothing much of note here either. Torgue and his extremely shouty and over-the-top muscle-man wrestler demeanour. There are some quests that repeat three times to end up at level 50, but otherwise it’s a fair 30-35 ride. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage feels like an appropriate follow-up. Yeah, starting at level 30 but escalating just a little bit over its course, Mr. Torgue’s Campaign of Carnage (though in a slightly different manner and not so drawn out). Her honesty with regards to her eventual inevitable betrayal is refreshing, but they play the same joke again in Mr. I’m pretty sure Scarlett is not voiced by an actual English woman. (It can’t jump and it feels like it should be able to - and that’s a whole new “pancake” challenge right there.) It’s also set in a desert so, although there is the usual environmental grandeur, we’ve been there so often before. The vehicles are also replaced with a new Star Wars-y sand skiff, which is a too-slow hovering vehicle that cannot drift. Otherwise, it’s more of the same with a salty sea-dog tint the enemies are no longer bandits and psychos but buccaneers and rapscallions and so on. ![]() Well, my levelling worries were mostly unfounded - this whole adventure remains pegged at level 30, with the occasional level 32 boss. It is, and always will be, all about the Claptrap. Which implied that, no matter which one I chose to begin, I would soon be quite overlevelled for the others. Now I finished the final boss just over level 34, which meant that even before I had completed the story I was well primed to start any one of the packs. The other issue lies right there: all four packs start with quests pegged at level 30. ![]() Despite each one appearing to be set chronologically after the main plot has concluded (with Tiny Tina’s opening cinematic coming complete with a nasty spoiler), they all become accessible from the Fast Travel network as soon as you get access to that - after leaving the tutorial, you are quite free to teleport to missions pegged at level 30. Perhaps the most notable element of all this is that the DLC packs are immediately available. As if 35-odd hours of grinding the main game wasn’t enough… (I’ll never be able to finish that, you bastards.)Īnd then there are four chunky DLC mission packs to get through. If it’s not a hilariously blatant multi-sequel hook, it’s a post-game side quest that can only be completed in co-op with four level 50 characters. These days, the final boss is never the end of the line. ![]() ![]() If you were at Renown 1, it would take 300,000 fish to reach Renown 30 for Iskarr Tuskarr (excluding bonus reputation). The stakes were that much higher in 1510, when my novel is set. One painter monopolising it was “a crime against art” he declared. The artist Christian Furr attacked him in an article, arguing that black is sacred, possessing a visceral power, and that Goya, Turner and Manet could not have created their most memorable work without it. But whereas this was never hailed as the bluest blue, Kapoor took for himself the definitive version of black, and since he hadn’t even invented it this was unforgivable to some of his peers. In the ’60s, Yves Klein patented a mixture for blue, named International Klein Blue, which he went on to use in a series of monochrome paintings and sculptures. Kapoor bought the exclusive rights to it from an engineering company in Surrey. It absorbs light at 99.9% and to look at it is like staring into an abyss. He had just copyrighted Vantablack, “the world’s blackest black”. The notion of pigment being something people would fight over, even die for, came to my mind after hearing a radio interview with Anish Kapoor, the great modern interpreter of form and colour. It turns out to be his colourman, who supplies rare pigments that can’t be procured from any of the other “vendecolori” in the city. ![]() It opens with the real-life Venetian painter, Giorgione, taking a boat to the plague island of Poveglia. This is the crux of my thriller, The Colour Storm. Titian used it to bring to life the heat-baked skies of mythological Greece, turning fable to super-reality.īut what if there had been a colour even more remarkable than ultramarine? Leonardo and Raphael employed ultramarine for the most crucial part of a painting, such as the Virgin’s gown, as did Giotto and Masaccio before them. It’s reported that Michelangelo gave up on his painting of The Entombment because he couldn’t secure any ultramarine, whereas Raphael only used it in the final coat, having built up earlier layers with more affordable azurite, or even indigo and smalt. ![]() Lapis was expensive, literally worth more than its weight in gold, and hard to come by since it was found solely in one remote stretch of mountains in the Hindu Kush. That rich, irrefutable blue, the pinnacle that all other blues, all other colours, can only aspire to.
